You’re Now an Adult

By Matt Schneider

For much of my life I wanted to get out of Ohio so badly and move to the east coast. I thought that’s where my next chapter would start. I was wrong. Coming out to LA has been a blessing and I plan to move here indefinitely upon graduating in a year. I don’t mind that it’s a driving town. I don’t mind that it’s a company town. I have everything at my fingertips here. This morning as I pulled up to Starbucks to get my morning coffee before my internship I thought it’s so strange that all my friends are sitting in class right now (in the freezing cold I must add) and I’m in my car commuting to work in sunny La La Land. Not only am I here meeting an endless number of individuals working in entertainment (and you can never know too many people), I get to enjoy the warmth and sunlight in the middle of February. But while you’re out here I have found that you need to put yourself in uncomfortable situations and meet as many people as you can. Accumulate the contacts in your rolodex. Schedule as many coffee/lunch/drink dates as you can. Ask every person you sit down with if they can recommend anyone else you should get in touch with. It may not be the first person you meet that will get you your first job, but it very well could be the second or third ones that will. I will leave you with one last word: follow-up with people too. It’s a must to stay in touch for the long-haul and eat some In-N-Out while you’re at it too…
