WEST COAST, BEST COAST

WEST COAST, BEST COAST

By Samantha Grant

If you’re presented with the opportunity to do a semester in Los Angeles, CA, why on earth wouldn’t you do it!? The sunshine, the beaches, the attractions, the glamour, the smog… actually let’s ignore that last one.  While Syracuse is in a ‘polar vortex’ freezing their butts, off your sitting pool side getting a tan. But seriously, I can honestly say that there is no place like California. However, I may be a bit biased because I’m from California, so you should really just experience it for yourself.  And on that note, while you’re out here make a point to travel north and visit the BEST part of California, the San Francisco Bay Area! But I digress…

Anyway, now that I’ve convinced you to take advantage of your opportunity and come out to the Golden State, let me give you some advice.  First off, make sure that you are explicitly clear with the type of internship you want to get.  Don’t be afraid to bug Robin and Lauren about it because this is your experience and you need to make sure that you get the most out of it. Trust me on this one. I’ve probably had the most complicated time finding an internship that fits what I’m looking for and I would go into more detail, but this blog post can only be so long.  So with that being said, don’t settle for any old internship, don’t rush into an internship, and if you don’t like the internship that you’re at and you feel that you’re not getting anything out of it make sure you speak up. This is your experience! Next, make sure you balance your schedule.  Don’t exhaust yourself.  You need to find time for work, class, and fun.  And on that last note, make sure you explore!! You are in California! There are so many things to do here! This is probably my most important piece of advice! Make time for yourself and go do things! Don’t work yourself to death; remember that you’re here not only for internship experience, but to see what CA has to offer you. Go hiking (Hollywood Sign, Runyon, Laurel, Malibu Creek), go to an amusement park (Magic Mountain, Knotts, Disney), go to museums (LACMA), go sight-seeing, go see a talk-show or taping,  go to the beach,  hell, go to Vegas! There are so many things to do, just make sure you go out and do them!  Tell everyone what you plan on doing, and go with whoever is willing! I can’t stress that enough. California is a magical place, full of magical things, and there is no place like it.  (Geez, I sound like a “Visit California” advertisement….they should pay me for this)
