The One Where Everyone Sits In Traffic

The One Where Everyone Sits In Traffic

By Lynn Walek

I was fortunate enough to spend last semester in London, which has arguably the best public transit system in the world. Or at least I think so. Everyone may have been squashed like sardines but I could get from my apartment to my classroom in 20 minutes flat. Now I spend anywhere between one to three and a half hours in my car on any given day. The people watching from my car is not nearly as interesting as public transit but my car karaoke skills are greatly improved. I know it’s cliché to talk about Los Angeles traffic but it’s something that is just incomprehensible until it takes you 90 minutes to go 14 miles. So for anyone that wants to come to LA I think it’s important to have a plan in place for your car. So my gift to you is a list of things to do while you are literally parked on the 405. 1. Learn a language. Rosetta Stone is a thing right? 2. Audio books. Get in some quality “reading” on your way to work. 3. Write the next great American novel (but don’t actually write it, buy an old fashioned tape recorder to record your brilliance and put it to paper later when not driving) 4. Listen to NPR. Educate yourself. Be an informed member of society. 5. Become a professional car singer. This is real. I’m considering putting it on my resume. So that’s my list, happy parking!
