We get off the 405, drive westward on Wilshire Blvd en route to Santa Monica, and pull into Sonny McLean’s. The bar has parking in the back, and we were fortunate enough to grab a spot there. My two friends and I walked out of the car and into the bar, not knowing what to expect on a quiet Sunday evening. We heard that it’s a place where Boston sports fans – like ourselves – unite to root for the respective Boston team playing on television. In this case, it was the New England Patriots.
It was the first week of the NFL season, and the famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask) quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for the first four games of the season. Would the inexperienced backup Jimmy Garoppolo be successful? Or would this be a long first four weeks for us Patriots fans? Sure enough, Jimmy delivered. The fans in the bar – nearly 100 in all – erupted as the final whistle blew in an upset win over the Arizona Cardinals. I turned to my two friends and said, “we have to do this again.” And with that, Sonny McLean’s has become our go-to spot for Sunday football games. This was truly an unexpected gem we came across, and I can confidently say that it has enhanced my experience in Los Angeles.
