Dear Parents of Fall 2016 SULA Semester students,
The SULA Semester program administration would like to thank you for your support as your student embarks on what we feel will be a most rewarding, educational and exciting college experience. As a parent, you are naturally excited at the opportunity for your son or daughter’s tremendous academic and personal growth, and at the same time we realize you have concerns and questions about the semester ahead.
Attached you will find information that was shown and distributed to students at the mandatory pre-departure meeting on Sunday, April 3rd. The first attachment is the registration guide for students to use to in selecting classes for their LA experience. The second attachment is the powerpoint presentation that was viewed by students (and discussed with them), and the third attachment is the pre-departure packet. Please use these materials as resources to help answer questions you may have about the various components of the program.
Students have been advised a car will be necessary to travel to and from their internship as well as to and from classes at SULA Headquarters. There is a public transportation system in LA but it is limited geographically and students may need to make three or four transfers in order to get to where they need to go. In addition to heavy LA traffic, this could add hours of commute time to a daily schedule.
If your student is staying at the Oakwood, check in begins 3 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2016. Students may arrive and check in throughout the weekend as their travel schedules allow. However, students need to have arrived and be somewhat settled in Los Angeles no later than Sunday evening, August 21st.
There will be extensive mandatory orientation for all SULA Semester students the week of August 22-26th (see page 5 of the pre-departure booklet for tentative events planned). There is a lot of valuable information and training given to students during this week. We have told students that missing any required portion will not be acceptable, so please be mindful when making travel arrangements.
If you are in the Los Angeles area, we invite you to attend the August 22nd orientation session at our beautiful SULA headquarters in Sherman Oaks. On Monday evening, there will be a welcome dinner for all students and their families where they will meet the SULA administration, instructors, and young alumni living in Los Angeles who have offered their mentoring services to our new students. Additional details of that dinner will be forthcoming this summer. Please save the date now, as we would love for you to join us.
