Living in LA with a New Perspective
By Caitlin Gillman
I was born in Los Angeles and have lived here for my entire life. LA is my home, my city, and the only place I had ever really known until I flew across the country to attend school at Syracuse. When I first heard about the SULA program, the last thing I wanted to do was apply to it. After all, why would I spend a semester at home instead of going abroad or being with all of my friends back at ‘Cuse? Since I was so unsure about the program, I applied to and got in to both the London and Los Angeles programs. After much thought and internal turmoil, I decided to go home for a semester and see what I could gain by doing the semester in Los Angeles. I am an animation major, so none of the other abroad programs really made sense for my career path. I also haven’t been able to take any film production or film business classes, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. Plus, being in VPA and doing Maymester last summer, I already had some connections under my belt. I wanted to see what I could gain by doing a program through Newhouse as well. Honestly, I am so glad I did this program. I had a few internships before, but the internship I had this semester was my first long-term one in a field I want to be in for my career. I definitely learned a lot about the business I want to get into and the entertainment industry in general.
