Internships

Internships are a central part of the LA Semester program. Internships provide students with real-world experiences and valuable insight into the entertainment industry. Interns learn entry-level skills, become exposed to professional environments, make connections and develop tools that will aid them as young professionals.

How will I get an internship?
The SULA Semester staff partners with each student to ensure they secure an internship for the semester.

All students are required to have a one on one meeting with the LA Semester Director to discuss areas of interest and potential internship placement. These appointments will take place on campus or via Skype.

Students will be required to submit their resume with their program application. All students should visit the Newhouse Career Development Center and attend their seminar on Résumé & Cover Letter Writing. Students should begin by pursuing internship opportunities on their own via the internet.  The major media conglomerates all have formal internship programs with a variety of internships. These positions are very competitive and it is in the best interest of the student to immediately apply for any openings that are of interest.  These opportunities are posted as they become available so it is important to continually check back on these websites.

Secondly, the SULA staff will  post current internship opportunities and provide students with information regarding internships based on their expressed area of interest.  Students will receive a job description, an overview of responsibilities and instructions on how to apply. This is not a guarantee of placement. Each student will be responsible for sending in their resume and cover letter, securing an interview (in person, phone or skype) and “closing the deal”.  (See Internship Interviewing Tips)

Additionally, students should research opportunities at companies of interest and utilize any personal contacts. The SULA staff will continue to work with all students until everyone has an internship.

How does the internship and internship class work  (in the Fall & Spring)?
All LA Semester students are required to intern 18 to 24 hours per week. You will register for your internship (RAE 400 or TRF 300) for a minimum of one credit or maximum of 3 credits through MySlice at your appointed registration time. The LA Internship Class is a required component of the program and must be taken in conjunction with your internship. The course is scheduled for Wednesday nights and is taught by the LA Semester Director, Robin Forman Howard.

How does the internship and internship class work  (in the Summer)?
All LA Semester students are required to intern 24 to 40 hours per week. You will register for your internship (COM 300) for  one credit through MySlice at your appointed registration time. The LA Internship Class is a required component of the program  and must be taken in conjunction with your internship. The course meets twice during the summer and is taught by the LA Semester Director, Robin Forman Howard.

What do I do now that I have secured my internship?
• Review the document titled, “What to include in your initial internship duties conversation” in your pre-departure packet.
• Log onto MySlice and click on OrangeLink (under Career Services) and register your internship placement. This should be done before you first day.
• On your first day of work, complete the LA Internship Site Agreement with your Supervisor and return the completed form to the Director or Assistant Director.
