Happiest when I’m in LA
By Charles Gilbert
I do not feel as if I have had a single moment of downtime since I touched down in LA to start my Fall semester. This city has revealed itself to be full of an overwhelming amount of opportunities that even if I were here for a year (3 months is far to brief), I wouldn’t be able to even scrape the surface. Between my internship, my various natural excursions, and the LA music scene, I can confidently say that I have never had more activity compressed into a shorter period of time.
Though I am majoring in the Bandier Program (a music industry program), I have been interning at The Young Turks, which is a Youtube channel specializing in news, while also hosting several niche network shows. I have always been interested in the film/television side of the entertainment industry, especially the independent Youtube sector, and working at The Young Turks has given me my first experience with the processes of direction and production. This has been my first internship where I do not just feel like an intern, but more a valued part of the team. I am actively involved in several projects, and am currently the director of TYT Sports, as well as an editor for the channel Nerd Alert. I am extremely thankful for my experience at TYT, and will continue to put forth my best effort and work.
Outside of class and work, I have done a lot of exploring out in nature. I have gone on several hikes, including a one up to Mugu Peak, which had some of the most amazing views of both the surrounding mountain range as well as the coastal islands. I have also spent as much time as possible going to various beaches in Santa Monica, Malibu, and other areas. I am happiest when I am at the beach, and I refuse to not take advantage of being in such close proximity. Overall, I would say that I’m happiest when I’m in LA.
