Growing up in a small town with relatively little to do, the local movie theater became a
big part of my life. This has made Los Angeles feel simultaneously alien and familiar. In
some ways this is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. It’s a new place with new people
and I’ve made my way here feeling very much on my own. The streets are packed, the
pace is quick, and compared to that little village in upstate New York, the city is an
overwhelming sight to take in.
And yet I feel somehow at home, because these people love their movies. Whether it’s a
big AMC complex, a small operation off a side street, or an LA landmark, theaters are
everywhere, and whether it’s an anticipated premiere or a beloved classic, it always
makes for an exciting experience. After these past few weeks with all the challenges and
adjustments, now the hardest part of a weekend out is only deciding what to see next.
