Coming to Los Angeles, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect. I’d seen the city in movies and TV, and heard the horror stories about endless traffic, but other than that, I had no real idea of what I was getting into. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to be out here since June, and in the four months that I’ve been here, I can say that I love it in Los Angeles. Here are some things I’ve learned since being out here. One, the traffic is really that bad, and it’s made worse by Google Maps lying to me every time. It says it will take 40 minutes to get to work every morning, and 20 minutes into the drive, it still says 40 minutes. Music and podcasts have quickly become my best friends. The podcast “Serial” and my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist are personal favorites. Another thing that I have realized is just how spread out Los Angeles actually is. While this means it may take a bit longer to get to places, it also means that there’s no shortage of fun things to do in your free time. From the Hollywood sign hike to a weekend Dodger’s game, you can fill your free time with fun adventures. Harry Potter World isn’t bad, either. Finally, I find that just being here, and being surrounded by the industry I want so badly to be apart of, is unbelievably rewarding for me. There’s always a good chance that someone new I meet is somehow involved in the industry, and this is fantastic for networking opportunities. In fact, I’ve met so many people in the industry, from fellow interns to random people on the street, that I decided to finally get a LinkedIn! It also means that I have a lot in common with everyone living here. We all, in some way, love entertainment. Being around these people gives me a drive and passion to be successful in the industry. I don’t think you can find this atmosphere anywhere else.
